Melbourne Crime Investigation Unit detectives have charged two boys following the alleged assault of an off-duty police officer in Southbank. Police allege the 32-year-old man was walking along Whiteman Street after finishing work when he was approached by three youths who became verbally abusive. Investigators allege the group then punched and kicked the victim before fleeing. The victim received treatment from paramedics at the scene. Two teenagers have since been charged, with investigations continuing into the third alleged offender.
Incidents involving unprovoked violence in public places can leave victims of crime with ongoing feelings of vulnerability and emotional distress.
Victorian victims affected by violent offending may be eligible to seek assistance through the Financial Assistance Scheme (FAS), including support for counselling and recovery-related expenses. Sending an enquiry can help clarify the support available.
