assault, robbery and sexual violence victims lured on dating apps.
Five teenage boys aged between 16 and 18 have been arrested in connection with a series of alleged attacks on men in Melbourne’s Greater Dandenong area. Reports indicate that the incidents involved the alleged offenders using dating apps and social media to arrange meetings before victims were reportedly assaulted, robbed, threatened and, in some cases, sexually assaulted. Police linked the group to 11 reported incidents, as part of a broader investigation into similar attacks across Victoria.
Experiencing violence, threats or sexual assault can have lasting effects on a person’s physical health, emotional wellbeing and sense of safety. Victims may need medical treatment, counselling or time away from work, and may find it difficult to discuss what happened.
In Victoria, victims of violent crime may be able to apply for financial assistance through the Financial Assistance Scheme (FAS). Depending on the circumstances, assistance may include reasonable medical expenses, counselling costs, safety-related expenses and other costs connected with recovery.
If you have experienced a similar incident, you can seek information about your options when you feel ready. Making an enquiry may help clarify whether FAS assistance is available and what that financial assistance could look like.
