do you need a police report to apply as a victim of crime?




One of the most common questions from victims of crime is whether a police report is required to apply for financial assistance.

In most cases, the violent incident must be reported to police for an application under the Financial Assistance Scheme (FAS) to proceed. This report helps confirm the circumstances of the offence and supports the application. However, there can be exceptions. Some victims of crime may be unable to report the incident immediately due to trauma, fear, or other personal circumstances. In certain cases, the scheme may still consider the application if there is a reasonable explanation through a statutory declaration.
