bacchus marsh assault leaves man burnt.

Detectives are investigating an assault in Bacchus Marsh, north-west of Melbourne, that left a 57-year-old man critically injured with burns.

Emergency services were called to a property on Lidgett Street around 9:00pm on Thursday following reports of a fire. Police found the man outside the property with significant upper body burns. Ambulance Victoria transported him to hospital in a critical condition. Investigators believe the injuries were sustained during an assault, although no arrests have been made.

Neighbours described the scene as horrific. One resident recalled hearing yelling and seeing the man rolling on the ground to extinguish the flames, while others immediately called 000 for help.

Assaults involving fire or severe physical harm can have long-lasting effects, both physically and emotionally. Victims and their families may face ongoing recovery challenges, including medical care and counselling needs. In Victoria, victims of crime may be eligible to apply for financial support through the Financial Assistance Scheme (FAS). The scheme can help cover medical treatment, counselling and other recovery-related expenses following a violent incident.

If you or a loved one has been affected by a violent assault, sending an enquiry can help you understand what support may be available and the steps involved in making an application.
