Police are investigating an alleged assault at Camp Sovereignty in Melbourne's Kings Domain that left a 37-year-old person with facial injuries.
The incident occurred on Sunday night at the First Nations protest site. The victim told the ABC they were allegedly attacked after approaching two strangers who had entered the site and were interfering with the sacred fire. The victim reported being dragged, placed in a headlock and repeatedly struck.
Paramedics treated the victim at the scene for facial injuries and checked them for concussion. The alleged offenders fled on foot before police arrived and investigators are continuing to seek witnesses and information. Police have indicated they are considering whether the incident may have been racially motivated.
