armed man in footscray prompts school lockdown.

Police have charged a 44-year-old man following an armed incident on Barkly Street in Footscray that prompted the lockdown of a nearby secondary school.

Authorities allege the man was armed with weapons and fired ball bearings at police during a lengthy confrontation. Officers eventually arrested the man after specialist negotiations, with police seizing edged weapons, imitation firearms and other prohibited items. No members of the public were physically injured during the incident.

Incidents involving weapons in public places can be extremely distressing for victims of crime, witnesses and nearby families, even where no physical injuries occur.

The Financial Assistance Scheme (FAS) may provide eligible victims with assistance for counselling and other recovery-related expenses arising from violent crime.

An enquiry can help explain what support may be available following a traumatic incident.
