violence at melbourne protest: when public incidents cause harm.

Protests linked to an international political visit turned tense in Melbourne, with clashes and arrests reported during demonstrations.  While many public gatherings are peaceful, situations can escalate quickly. Where people are injured as a result of assaults during protests, they may be left traumatised and can be recognised as victims of crime.

Under Victoria’s Victims of Crime Financial Assistance Scheme (FAS), eligible victims who have been physically or psychologically affected by a violent public incident may receive financial support for counselling, medical treatment, and other recovery-related expenses, and special financial. If this is you, you should consider seeking advice about your eligibility for assistance.

If you have experienced harm in a violent incident within Victoria and are seeking financial assistance, making an enquiry can help you understand your eligibility and next steps.
