financial assistance for lost income.

Violent crime can disrupt more than a person’s sense of safety — it can also significantly disrupt their ability to earn an income. Physical injuries, psychological trauma, and the need for ongoing medical treatment or counselling often make it difficult to return to work in the weeks or months following an offence. For some victims, even routine duties may feel overwhelming during recovery.

The Victims of Crime Financial Assistance Scheme (FAS) may provide financial assistance to help compensate for lost income where a victim is unable to work as a direct result of a violent crime. This assistance is designed to ease financial pressure during recovery, allowing victims to focus on their health and wellbeing rather than immediate financial strain.

Eligibility depends on the nature of the offence, the medical evidence available, and how the crime has affected the victim’s capacity to earn an income. Clear documentation, including medical reports and employment records, can be critical to a successful application.

If violent crime has affected your ability to work in Victoria, you may be entitled to financial assistance.
